Experience

I’ve always loved to learn. To me, the pursuit of knowledge is a vital component of a fulfilling life. Even more fulfilling is the idea of assisting others in that pursuit. I discovered a passion for teaching others at an early age. In junior high and high school, my classmates would see my test grades and ask me for help with their homework. Nothing was more satisfying than seeing them excel after I worked through the material with them. It was the same in college: it began with a few friends needing help with math, and ended up in tutoring sessions in a variety of subjects, including Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, and (especially) Geology. It was the best job I’ve ever had. Not only did my clients’ grades improve, my own understanding of the various subjects grew exponentially. I drew fulfillment not only from expanding others’ knowledge, but also my own. I graduated with a B.S. in Geology, and my grades put me at the top of my class in the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University. After graduation, I took a job in the oilfield. I learned my job so quickly that within three months I was given a series of trainees. I provided on the job training for nearly a third of our new employees. This trend continued for nearly four years as I advanced through various roles, culminating in my being made Manager of Field Operations in my company’s South Texas District. In this position I was in charge of the field training and development of nearly twenty employees. Just like in college, in teaching others I often found that I learned new things in the process. Unfortunately for many, the industry took a downturn earlier this year. Fortunately for me, that gave me a chance to take my love of teaching others a step further. I can help with any math up to but not including differential equations (I’m a little rusty with those), most sciences (including, but not limited to: chemistry, physics, biology, and of course geology), and SAT, ACT, and other standardized test prep. I have the most experience teaching algebra I&II, trigonometry, physics, and geology. When it comes to math and science, there’s no substitute for hard work and practice. To excel you have to work the problems. To work the problems you have to learn the concepts. To learn the concepts you have to understand the language in your textbook. All too often, that language is written by people who are so concerned about being rigorous and correct that they forget about actually teaching people. This is where I can help. I am what you might call a math (and science) to English translator. I’ll take that convoluted textbook jargon and turn it into plain English for you. I’ll help you understand the concepts so that you can work the problems. I’ll give you the tools to do the work and I’ll guide you as you practice. Fair warning: there will be homework. I am here to help you learn the concepts and guide you through the practice. I won’t do you the disservice of doing all the work for you. I’m flexible in hours and location, just contact me and let me know what you need. I’m excited to hear from you!

Hobbies

I enjoy the outdoors, whether its camping, fishing, hunting, biking, hiking, kayaking, or all of the above. Paradoxically, I also love PC gaming and building my own gaming rigs. My most recent hobby is working on cars, especially the under-appreciated ones from the 80s and 90s. My last project was a '86 Pontiac Fiero, and right now I'm working on a '92 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo.
